We are truely stoked to announce Freebord UK an official sponsor for Team GB Pro Snowboarder Owen Pick.
Owen Pick is a soldier who lost a leg in a Taliban blast in Afghanistan and now he has become a snowboard sensation…here’s his story.
Owen Pick joined the 1st Battalion, The Royal Anglians straight from school. 3 months into his first tour of Afghanistan, he got blown up. That was in January 2010.
He was just 18 years old.
They been under fire all day and got the order to assault a compound. Owen stood on an IED (Improvised Explosive Device).
Owen recalls he didn’t know anything about it, all he remembers is a white flash, but he says he was apparently blown about 10 feet in the air. He woke up back in Selly Oak in Birmingham with his parents by my hospital bedside.
He battled for 18 months to keep his leg, but in the end nothing was working. The surgeons gave him the choice: take it off or keep having numerous operations in the hope it might get better. In August 2011 he eventually decided to amputate his leg below the knee.
He felt relieved once he’d made the decision, and since then he has not looked back.
Owen is now rated 7th in the World and, if he maintains that rating, is on target for a place in the 2018 Winter Paralympics in South Korea.
Owen contacted Freebord UK after finding difficulties getting back into his love for skating following his injury.
Freebord was the board for him. He now has the best of both worlds, skating and snowboarding.
He is currently in South Korea for the Paralympic test event for 2 weeks, after which we are looking forward to see what Owen can achieve on a Freebord.
I for one cannot wait!
